Learn about Twelve Months to Financial Freedom by Canna Campbell and Michael Thompson.

Let’s clear something up: money doesn’t need to be a constant source of stress. Really, it doesn’t. And you don’t have to win the lottery to have financial freedom. But knowing the right, simple steps to take, and finding the time to take them . . . well, it can feel like a lot. That’s where this book comes in.
Do you feel like you need to do more with your money, but don’t know where to start?
Are you flat out with day-to-day chaos, with life admin, with kids, with work, and so your finances live full-time on the backburner?
Have you ever looked at your bank account and wondered where the money goes?
Do you try your best to be responsible, and feel like you have nothing to show for it?
Do you dream of having more money, to give you more choices and more freedom in life?
Do you feel like you could be getting a better deal, or starting to invest, or building a financial safety net, if only you had some help to take the first step?
If so, then Twelve Months to Financial Freedom is for you. Because you’re not alone. Since 2022 we (Canna and Michael) have hosted the personal finance podcast How Do They Afford That? Canna is a financial planner with more than two decades of experience, and the founder of the SugarMammaTV financial literacy platform. Michael is an author and journalist who had a desire to get his family finances organised, but, before working with Canna, had no idea where to start.
So, together, we wrote Twelve Months to Financial Freedom for you, for anyone treading water financially and feeling like they should be getting ahead but not having the time or the knowledge to do it.
That can all change in just one year—because Twelve Months to Financial Freedom is designed to be your companion over twelve months. You don’t need to read it all at once; in fact, you shouldn’t. Instead, be kind to yourself, and take it slowly. Month by month, we break down finances into manageable chunks, from budgeting to investing, and everything in between.
Each chapter covers just one month, and each one begins the same way: with a short conversation between us that explores why this month matters. Then we set out exactly what’s ahead, with a to-do list of the big and small goals we’re going to work through together. And at the end of the month, there’s a checklist so that you can tick off everything you’ve achieved.
By the end of the year, you’ll feel more calm, confident and in control. Your money will be working for you, not the otherway around. It doesn’t have to end there; you can come back to individual months again and again, revisit those checklists, and reconnect with the support and guidance whenever you need some help. Some months are so meaningful they might even become a permanent part of your calendar.
And a quick note on timing: you don’t need to wait until January to get started. The twelve chapters can be treated as twelve steps, and done whenever you like (although Step 6: June simplifies your tax and Step12: December eases your festive season burden, so those are best saved for that time of year).
Now, get ready to embark on your journey to financial freedom. The next twelve months will set you up for life.
